Career Day Series: Microlearning with Sonlight

Social Media Influencer

Have you ever read a story, watched a video, or heard an idea that changed the way you think? Throughout history, people have found ways to share their voices with the world — and one of the first big breakthroughs was the invention of the printing press. It made it possible for ideas to spread farther and faster than ever before.

Today, social media is one of the most powerful tools for sharing ideas. Social media influencers do more than post pictures — they use creativity, storytelling, and communication skills to teach, inspire, entertain, and even start conversations about important topics. And while not every kid is online (and that’s okay!), learning how messages spread can help you think about how your voice can make a difference, too.

Dive Deeper
Before social media made it easy to share ideas online, one invention changed everything—the printing press. It made books and information available to more people than ever before. Discover how this revolutionary idea shaped the way we communicate in today's podcast!

Sonlight Community Career Spotlight
Known for his work as the voice of the Inquiskids Daily podcast and the science guy in Sonlight’s Discover & Do videos, Luke is an Education Content Creator. While he’s not an influencer and doesn’t post on social media or YouTube, he does help with the ideation, development, and production of digital content for a specific audience. His audience is kids like you!

Luke

Education Content Creator – 10+ Years

Favorite Sonlight Product/Book: Luke struggled to choose a favorite product/book because "there are simply too many great books." Some of the books he most enjoyed are: By the Great Horn Spoon, The Phantom Tollbooth, and The Gammage Cup.

Homeschooling?: Luke was homeschooled and plans to homeschool his kids!

Why He Became Interested in This Job: He loves “learning and sharing” information!

Favorite Part of the Job: “The satisfaction of a really fun video coming together, especially when someone later tells me how much they enjoyed it. I also like having solved a problem so we can make something cool. [And] sharing something that someone else will get a kick out of learning.”

Least Favorite Part of the Job: Sometimes technology doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to, and solving those problems can be frustrating. It’s also challenging when a project changes direction because of decisions made by others—especially after you’ve already started working on it.

Skills Needed for Job:

💻 Technology skills, as content creators “work with expensive technology every day,” so understanding “how to use it and care for it” ... everything from specialized lenses to complex software is important.

➗ Math, which “shows up when we need to do ratios, data transfer speed calculations, some set construction stuff, and other technical bits.”

📚 Reading and writing skills, which are “important for script development and performing.”

💼 Business skills, as you want to create content that is profitable.

🧪 Science, which is primarily relevant when creating science-specific content but is not wholly relevant for all education content creators (as it will depend on the subject you teach).

His Advice for Future Content Creators:  “Make content and keep making it. The skills you pick up from doing things you are interested in will help you as you make new things and solve problems throughout the process. The more you have in your proverbial ‘back pocket,’ the more you have to use when making something fun.”
