Career Day Series: Microlearning with Sonlight

Inventors
What if you could invent something brand new? Maybe it’s a flying skateboard, a robot that finishes your chores, or a gadget that solves a problem no one has figured out yet. Inventors are people who take ideas and turn them into real things that can change the way we live, work, or play.

They use creativity, problem-solving, and determination to bring their ideas to life — sometimes after lots of trial and error. Can you think of a problem you recently had? What could you invent to solve it?

Sonlight Community Career Spotlight
While today’s podcast explores inventors who build gadgets and solve problems, but they can also work with words. In our Sonlight Community Spotlight, you'll meet Bethany, a self-published author. Authors invent things such as new stories and characters in books or to spread the word of Jesus Christ, sometimes in social media or other platforms to share their work with readers.

Bethany

Author for 13 Years

Favorite Sonlight Product/Book: The book on George Muller from History / Bible / Literature Program B

Homeschooling?: Yes, she is homeschooling her son.

Why She Became Interested in This Job: Bethany has loved writing since she was young. She fell even more in love because of her language arts classes in school and her experience with various writing jobs after college.

Favorite Part of the Job: Bethany loves encouraging others to seek Christ in all things through her writing.

Least Favorite Part of the Job: A downside to being an author today is that self-publishing has led to an oversaturated market, and there is pressure to build an audience through social media and speaking to compete for attention.

Skills Needed for the Job:

💻Digital communication — to create engaging social media posts for online readers

📚Reading skills — because great authors are also great readers

✒️Writing — writers continue to practice and improve their craft

Her Advice for Those Interested in This Career:  "Take lots of language arts classes, enter your work into contests, and find ways to continue refining your craft after school, like joining a critique group."

Her Advice to All Learners: "Get practice with public speaking."
