Career Day Series: Microlearning with Sonlight

Mathematician
Mathematicians working on a math problem on a black board
Math is all around us, even when you don't notice it! It’s in the games you play, the music you love, the buildings you see, and even the stars in the sky. Math isn’t just about numbers on a page—it’s about solving puzzles, spotting patterns, and discovering how the world works.

A mathematician is like a detective who uses logic and creativity to crack codes, design inventions, and explore new ideas. They help scientists build rockets, engineers design video games, doctors find cures, and athletes improve their performance.

Dive Deeper

Sonlight Community Career Spotlight
While today's podcast introduces you to Katerine Johnson and the big role math plays in space exploration, some careers use math in ways much closer to home. Today you'll meet an accountant who uses numbers to help people and businesses keep track of their money, make budgets, and plan for the future. Just like mathematicians, accountants need strong problem-solving skills and careful attention to detail—because even the small mistakes can make a big difference.

Why He Became Interested in This Job: This Sonlighter didn’t immediately know that he wanted to be an accountant; it took a while, but his love of numbers and rules led to an accounting career. When he was young, no one talked about being an accountant. He didn't even know it was a "thing." But he believes he's chosen a "great way to spend the workday," as there are "lots of areas of specialization; you could have fun and be blessed to find yours!"

Favorite Part of the Job: He loves that he gets to do what he enjoys while helping people.

Least Favorite Part of the Job: Sometimes getting things to balance is difficult.

Skills Needed for Job:

➗ Math skills, the key part of the job

📚 Reading, to review figures, data, and paperwork

✒️ Writing, for communicating with clients

💻 Technology skills, to navigate accounting programs and software

🧪 Science, as accounting is its own kind of science. Just like a scientist makes careful observations and records accurate data, accountants need to be objective, precise, and work with facts. They look at numbers as evidence, making sure everything adds up correctly so people and businesses can trust the results.

🗣️ Foreign language skills, can be useful when working with those who do not speak the same language
